Homeopathy is a gentle, holistic system of medicine that has been used all over the world for over 200 years. The aim of homeopathy is to restore health and vitality to the individual by using homeopathic remedies to stimulate the body’s natural healing response. Based on the principle that the human body has a life force that is always striving for equilibrium, a homeopath sees emotional and physical reactions or symptoms as communication by the body that support is needed.
During the consultation the patient is asked many questions in order to build up a detailed history of the individual and their specific symptoms. The Homeopath uses this information to find a remedy that may gently stimulate the body’s own potential to heal in order to restore good health.
Remedy selection is based on the theory known as “the law of similars” or treating “like with like” meaning that a substance that may cause symptoms in a healthy person may be used to help a sick person suffering with the same symptoms. For example the remedy Allium Cepa made from dilute extracts of the common onion may be used for colds and hayfever, where the main symptoms are a constant runny nose and eyes.
Homeopathic medicines are made from plant, chemical, mineral or animal sources through a process called potenisation. The substance is diluted in a water/alcohol solution and then shaken vigorously with impact (known as succussion). This process produces a non-toxic substance, which means the remedies may be used safely at any point during a person’s life. Remedies are prescribed in various forms, tablet, pilule, liquid or occasionally powder.
